This project was both an exploration of AI integrated design and a robotic fabrication challenge, inspired by Gabo’s sculpture “Linear Construction in Space No.1”. Using a convolutional neural network (CNN) script, Grasshopper and Python, our team derived an unique ceiling composition that was brought to life through 3D digital modeling. The final design was a two layer ceiling formed of ruled surfaces. The repeating unit in the 3D composition was chosen to be fabricated by a 6 axis industrial IRB 4600 robotic arm using foam as our material. This intersection of design and technology allowed to create an unique ceiling composition realized by a full scale physical prototype. A lighting mechanism tied to a motion sensor coded by Arduino was used in the prototype.
